Follow the snail slime….
Step into “Arcadia”; our utopian world of treasures and new realities following our creative journeys as Artists in Residence at The Glasgow School of Art. A place where you can find roaming bejewelled creatures, textured vessels and objects that challenge your perception. Each artist brings their own unique concept; such as themes of absence, nostalgia, preciousness and materiality, to create a dreamlike experience for our audience. We welcome you to explore our work and join us to celebrate our residency at GSA.

Monica Findlay
Monica Findlay is a recent Silversmithing and Jewellery graduate living and producing work in Glasgow. Through making, she explores her curiosity for the material presence of the past, creating contemporary objects and jewellery that respond to personal narratives and historical artefacts found in the National Museum Scotland. Monica views her pieces as containers for memory, choosing boxes as a means of conceptual communication.

Caius Bearder
Caius Beader’s inspiration for his Reflections in Silver Collection stems from his home island of Guernsey. The natural beauty of the island's coastlines inspires the flowing lines and forms in his work, combining soft aquatic surface lines and denser textures to reflect turbulent rockfaces and waves. Working in silver, Caius uses a combination of textural engraving, raising, and fabrication to achieve the details which provide dynamic light play to the surfaces of his pieces.

Samantha Sloane
Terra Incognita" translates for unexplored terrain, or the unknown. My work aims to challenge the viewers perception through my exploration of materiality and sustainability through the use of foraged shells and other natural materials. By taking on the aesthetic of the rock found on the Scottish West coast, my work acts as a hybridisation of my past and current lived experiences within this environment.

Kristina Merchant
Kristina’s conceptual and narrative-led artworks engage the viewer in playful perceptions of material preciousness. Her graduate collection Vision of Beauty is a narrative jewellery-mise-en-scène themed scour of the street. These pieces are imbued with realism and materiality. The objects and jewellery pieces highlight a message on societal norms of littering single-use plastic and disregarded objects found along the cracks of the concrete pavement. From the most littered item on earth, the cigarette filter, to pavement pennies, these pieces aim to spark a conversation about what is considered precious material. However, they do so with a humorous intention.

Amy Findlay
Amy’s collection focuses on the disgust of slugs and translating this into fine jewellery, enrapturing the viewer to look closer and create a bond with the unlikely creatures. A fun and playful series of characters are included in the collection.
This story is told through the colour, shape and size of stones used. Patination is added to the slugs, giving them a realistic appearance.

Scott Smith
Scott Smith is a silversmith and contemporary maker whose works explore the importance of meditative craft through the processes of carving, raising and casting. Scott uses materials such as precious metals and reclaimed wood alongside a variety of repetitive and meditative practises, traditionally favoured by ancient Scottish craftspeople, to interrogate early Pictish carvings, contemplating mark making and the authenticity of replicas.
